Velma V. Salisbury, 99, of Rockford, formerly of Blue Mound, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 at 11:15 a.m. in Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. Born Dec. 3, 1910 in Blue Mound, the first child of John and Etta (Gabriel) Buchter. Velma grew up in a large, close knit farm family. A graduate of Blue Mound High School and Illinois State Teacher's College at Normal she taught in one room country schools for 13 years. She married Lloyd D. Salisbury July 16, 1938. For many years she was bookkeeper for Lloyd's Standard Oil Agency. He passed away April 9, 2004. Velma was an active member of the First Christian Church of Blue Mound. She especially enjoyed cooking, gardening, needle work, reading, card club and family gatherings. Survived by her sons, Dr. Gary (Linda) Salisbury of Rockford, Dr. John (Patricia) Salisbury of Little Chute, WI; grandchildren, Tara Russell of Mahtomedi, MN, Dr. Dana (Paul Shirkey) Salisbury of Corvallis, OR, Erin (Christopher) Kernkamp of Madison, WI, Jason (Jennifer) Salisbury of Appleton, WI: great-grandchildren, Amanda and Lucas Russell and Paige Shirkey; sisters, Norma (Richard) Hartwig of Springfield and Elsie Godbey of Edinburg, sister-in-law, Esther Buchter of Rochester; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: brothers, LaVerne Buchter and Dellas Buchter; sisters, Violet Goken and Dessie Wierney; nephews Michael and Tom Wierney; and grandson, Todd Aaron Salisbury.
Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, in First Christian Church of Blue Mound with Dr. Ellen Moma officiating. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010 in Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home in Blue Mound. Burial will be in Hall Cemetery, Blue Mound.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or to Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. Thanks to the wonderful staffs of Provena Cor Mariae Center and Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center for the loving care of Velma these past eight years.
