Obituary

Rex (Virgil) Wood Rex Wood, age 90, of Rockford passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, February 2, 2023. Rex was born on February 29, 1932, in Rondo, Arkansas, to Charles and Ruby Wood. He was raised in Rondo and graduated from Rondo High School. He married Barbara Hendry on September 24, 1976, in Rockford, Illinois, where they lived and attended Berean Baptist Church. Rex worked at the Rock River Reclamation District in Rockford for many years. Together, Rex and Barbara had a daughter, Sarah. They were married for 29 years when Barbara passed away in 2005. Rex married Ann Cox on October 21, 2007. Rex and Ann were married ten years when Ann passed away on December 28, 2017. Survivors are Rex’s daughter, Sarah Wood (Elgin); step-children with Barbara: Bobby Hendry (Beloit, WI), Jerry Hendry (Trenton, TN), and Teresa (Ernie) Smith (Rockford); step-children with Ann: James (Carol) Cox, Jr. (Normal); Dennis (Ann) Cox (Roscoe); Brian (Kristi) Cox (Chana), and Lori (David) Martin (Lakeland, FL). Rex had many step-grandchildren & step-great grandchildren. One of those many grandchildren with whom he was quite close was Amanda Hendry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Ruby Wood; his first wife, Barbara; his second wife, Ann, and a brother, Charles Wood, as well as two sisters: Jeanette Dickinson and Winnie Cunningham. Pastor Melvin Swanson led Rex to the Lord when he was working on a farm in Pecatonica many years ago. From then on, Rex loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Berean Baptist Church of Rockford, Illinois. He loved the bus ministry and served as a bus mechanic with Jim Tucker for many years at the church. He really enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, yardwork, and working on the house. Rex is remembered by his loved ones and friends for his wonderful spirit, his love for lost souls and his love for children and the bus ministry. Rex appreciated and was grateful for nurse Mikayla, and caregivers Latavia Wright, Dawn Plock, Sarah Christians, Mary Novoa, Rachel Higgs, Adrian Bartscher, Cindy Wiles, Suann Engstrom, and Angela Castillo. Services will be held at Berean Baptist Church, 5626 Safford Rd, Rockford, Illinois, on Thursday, February 9, 2023, with visitation at 10:00 a.m., and the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Sunset Memorial Gardens located at 8800 N Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, Illinois, 61115. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the church following the burial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Berean Baptist Bus Ministry, which was a ministry for which Rex had a great love and devotion. Sundberg Funeral Home is caring for the family.
