ROCKFORD, IL – Michael “Mick” Edward Powell, 73, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Harbor House, Wheeling, Illinois. He was born July 18, 1947 in Rockford, the son of Edmund Powell and Shirley (Brundine) Powell.
Mick was a retired school teacher having worked for the Rockford Public Schools District 205 for 34 years. He graduated from Guilford High School in 1965 and from Illinois State University in 1970. He was an athlete in high school and college and his passion was sports and physical fitness. He shared his love of sports with his sons by coaching many of their sports teams and taking many trips with them to see the Cubs and the Bears. Mick served in the U. S. Army in the early 1970’s during the Vietnam War era and was stationed in Germany. He enjoyed time spent with family and friends
Mick is survived by his sons Ryan (Lisa) of Rockford and Bradley of St. Louis, MO, and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Finnan, Alexis, Andrew and Angelina Powell, all of Rockford. Also survived by sister Mary Stratton, along with nephews, other family members and many friends. Predeceased by his parents, Edmund and Shirley Powell.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 12th at 2:00 PM at Sundberg Funeral Home in Rockford. Private burial in Highland Gardens Cemetery in Belvidere, Illinois. The family would like to thank Suncrest Hospice, staff at Harbor House and Attorney Mary Gaziano for their support.
