Michael Lund Obituary

Michael “Mike” D. Lund of Rockford, Illinois passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 13, 2026.  The son of Frank and Irene Lund, Mike was born on October 28, 1940, and grew up in Rockford. In 1962, Michael enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. During his three years of service, he attained the rank of Army Specialist E5. Among other awards, he earned recognition as a sharpshooter (rifle M-14).  Mike built a career as a master carpenter, becoming a highly respected and sought-after quality home builder. He built or remodeled countless homes with exceptional craftmanship and formed lifelong friendships with many of his clients along the way.  Mike generously used his talents to volunteer for organizations including Habitat for Humanity; Kids Around the World (building playgrounds); and traveled to assist Samaritan’s Purse in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Closer to home, Mike was a dedicated volunteer for the Literacy Council, where he helped numerous students learn to read. In addition, he enjoyed leading a singles group at First Free Church for several years; as well as volunteering at Swedish American Hospital.  Mike loved reading, had a broad range of knowledge, and a keen interest in weather patterns. He will also be fondly remembered for his colorful suspenders.  Michael is survived by his son Bret (Cindy) Lund of Byron, IL and his beloved granddaughter Payton Lund; son Chris “Scott” Lund of Roscoe, IL; grandsons Alex Lund and Mason Lund; his beloved honorary daughter, Dr. Laura Windham of Philadelphia, PA; his sister Judy (Rod) Peterson of Rockford; many treasured nephews and nieces; and several dear friends.  Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his three sisters Susan Johnson, Barbara Rehnberg, and Patricia Kellaney.  An informal graveside memorial service honoring the life of Michael Lund will be held on May 9th at 2pm at the Scandinavian Cemetery (1700 Rural Street, Rockford – Please enter off Guilford Road. Once inside gate, take the third left). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Veteran’s Drop-in Center (1539 S. Fourth St., Rockford, IL 61104 or veteransdropincenter.com).
