Kendal S. "Ken" Kerns, 60, died at 3:13 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 26, 1950 in Davenport, IA, the son of Robert J. and Jeanne (Senjen) Kerns. He was a former singer in the group White Rock. He graduated from Guilford High School and attended Rock Valley College. Ken was formerly employed with the Rockford Housing Authority. In 1980, Ken founded RAMP and served as its first President of the Board. He also founded CCDI (Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities of Illinois) in Springfield, and spent his life working for the rights of the disabled . Ken enjoyed keeping in touch with his friends on his computer. Survivors include his mother, Jeanne of Rockford, a brother, Kevin M. Kerns of Rockford, his aunt, Sandra "Sam" Tack of Phoenix, AZ, a cousin Virginia Ann Olsen, Sister Bay, WI, long-time friends, Elizabeth "Beth" Langen of Springfield, IL and Jane Hawkins-Hoff of Rockford, and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to his long time caregiver, Ned. Predeceased by his father, a brother, Clayton "Webb" Kerns, and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Betsy" Kerns.
RAMP will honor Ken's life with an Open House at their Winnebago County office, 202 Market St., Rockford, on Thursday, January 27 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., with a special program and dedication at noon. A light lunch will be served. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to RAMP, 202 Market St., Rockford, IL 61107.
