Josephine Ann Pumilia passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8 at the incredible age of 98, in Boynton Beach, Florida. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt, Josephine had a quick wit and loving spirit and was a friend and confidante to many during her long life.
Josephine met her husband, N.J “Joe” Pumilia, in Rockford, Illinois, and they were married on April 12, 1942. In the 1940s, while Joe served in World War II, Josephine was actively involved as a factory worker contributing to the war effort. Joe and Jo went on to have three children, and spent their life together in Rockford, Illinois, and south Florida.
Josephine was a celebrated family member and had three children, Dee Dee (Gary), Nicholas (Sara) and Cyrus (Brenda). She is preceded in death by her husband N.J “Joe” Pumilia, parents Ciro “Cy” and Mary (Costanza) Gulino, siblings Virginia “Jinks” Doran and Loretto “Larry” Gulino, and grandson Christopher “Chris” Berglin. She is survived by many grandchildren, Brady and Ryan (Ruth) Berglin, Marisa (Jon) Vancos, Alanna (David) Berglund, Nicholas, Cyrus “Anthony” and Joseph “Joey” Pumilia. Josephine was also a very proud great-grandmother to Odin & Olena, Daniel, Josie, Vera & Vincent, Oliver & Ellie, and Alec & Austin. Josephine is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life is planned for Josephine’s family and friends at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Rockford, Illinois on Saturday, May 21. Visitation is from 12 noon to 1:00 pm, and the Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00 pm. For any who wish, a donation to your favorite charity in memory of Josephine would be very in keeping with her generous spirit.
