Barbara Ann (Poppe) Block

Rockford-Barbara Ann Block, aged 88, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2019 after a long illness. Barbara was born at home in New Bremen, Ohio. She was a graduate of Bowling Green State University, a member of the Phi Mu Sorority, a member of Bethel United Church of Christ of Rockford and Riverside Community Church of Machesney Park. She was baptized, confirmed and married by the same minister from St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. She was a teacher for over 39 years and taught in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Illinois. In Rockford, she was a homebound teacher that taught children who were physically unable to attend school by teaching at their homes or by their hospital beds. She was active with Girl Scouts as a child and as a leader later in life. Barbara visited all 50 states and all 50 state capitals. She and her husband, Tom visited over a thousand lighthouses in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Thomas C. Block; two daughters, Susan Block of Rockford, IL, Sara Johnson and her husband of Warner, NH; son, Chip Block and his wife of Rockford, IL; grandchildren Daniel Block, Morgen Johnson, Macy Johnson, Cori Block, and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara’s memorial will be held on March 28 at Riverside Community Church, 6815 N. 2nd Street, Machesney Park, IL. Visitation begins at 10:00 am, and the service is at 11:00am.
