Angela "Koula" Papson

Angela "Koula" Papson, 72, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 22, 2010, in her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on August 31, 1937 in Kolines, Greece, a beautifully forested area some thirty kilometers from Tripoli in the northern Peloponnesus. Angela was the daughter of Basil and Dimitra (Shoni) Carafotias. She emigrated from Greece in 1962 to join her family that had already arrived in Rockford some ten years earlier. In 1964 she married George Papson. Angela was predeceased by her mother and father, Basil and Dimitra, whom she cared for tenderly in the last ten years of their lives. This loving, gracious and kind mother and grandmother touched so many lives and taught us the important lesson that it is more sacred to give than to receive. She will live in our hearts forever. Angela was a seamstress for many years and worked at Castronovos, Baskin-Stuckey, and later at Sparkle Cleaners on 7th Street. She enjoyed cooking and sewing. Angela adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Survivors include her children, Demetrius (Brenda) Papson of Arlington, Heights, IL, Patty (Steve) Stadelman, of Rockford, and Val "Bill" (Amanda) Papson of Rockford, grandchildren, Austin, Nikolas, Andreas, Angela, Justin, and Adam, a great-granddaughter, Riley, her siblings, Katherine Panouses of East Moline, IL, Nick (Jean) Cary of Rockford, and Georgia (George) Manesis of Kenosha, WI, numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. William Edwards and staff at ACT Medical Group and the Visiting Nurses Association for the compassionate care and treatment of Angela.
Funeral service 1:00 p.m., Wed., August 25, 2010 in Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 108 N. Fifth St., with Fr. Demetrios Kounavis officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday at Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd., 215 N. Sixth Street, Rockford. from 5 - 8:00 p.m., Trisagion Service preceding visitation at 4:30 p.m. Online condolences may be made at sundbergfh.com. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name at Associated Bank under "Angela Papson Memorial fund" for a philanthropic cause.
